Re: Proposal to revive Under the Elms, an English major newsletter

I propose to revive Under the Elms, an English major newsletter written by and for English majors. The newsletter will cover issues important to English majors including class reviews, teacher profiles, alumni interviews, a schedule of events, an index of our university's publications where English majors can submit their work, and other features yet to be determined.

Under the Elms was begun by Professor J.P. Jones but has been dormant for several years due to lack of organization . I have the leadership and skills to make this newsletter a reality. I have already acquired the work of a graphic designer who designed a logo for Under the Elms. I am proficient in Adobe PageMaker, the software used for layout. I have experience writing journalistically and editing. I have acquired support from two other students interested in working with me. Dr. Jones has offered to refer other promising writers and I hope to secure similar assurances from other professors. I also plan request Ms. Seesa's authorization to advertise for writers via the English major listserv.

I propose the publication of two issues of Under the Elms during the spring 2000 semester. One issue would appear directly after spring break. The second would come out during the last week of classes.

I am requesting $500 to cover printing costs for the spring 2000 semester. The Copy Center in Admin Heaven Hall quoted me the one-time price of approximately $230 for printing, folding, and stapling 620 11x17 pages. These would be folded to make each issue 8 pages and would provide enough copies for all 305 English majors, plus 5 extras for faculty and an Under the Elms archive.

Since I am graduating in May, I intend to find at least two lower-level students who can work with me this semester and take over after my departure. This should prevent another lapse in publication.

I believe Under the Elms will be a positive learning experience for all those involved with producing and writing for it and an important source of information for all its readers.© Ji
