These modules are open and available for use by faculty in the English
Department teaching English 3764: Technical Writing and related courses,
as well as by faculty in other departments whose courses incorporating
workplace writing.
Each module stands as an independent unit, so you can select and
organize the material as needed for your class and your students.
Please feel free to link directly to individual modules, and use as
much or as little of the material here as you find helpful. We do
ask, though, that you honor our copyright and link directly to this
site, rather than copying the material to your own site.
Linking to the site
You can, of course, directly link to any page in the site simply by
copying the URL. However, the site includes two additional options
that allow you to customize that link:
-
Every page contains an Exit link in the upper right corner
that returns users to the page they came from (e.g. your course
syllabus). By default, the link simply says "Exit";
to include a specific destination (e.g. "Exit To Dr. Smith's
Course Page"), make the link as follows:
...filename.htm?title=Your%20Course%20Page%20Title
where ...filename.htm is the page URL. Note that the URL does recognize
%20 as a blank space. The site then replaces "Exit" with
"Exit To" followed by the title you specify.
E.g. ...filename.htm?title=My%20Home%20Page becomes Exit To My
Home Page.
- By default, the form that allows students to email exercises
to you directly from the web site requires the student to enter
both your email address and their own:
However, when you link to the site, you can include your email address
in the link itself; the site will pick it up and require only the
student's address. To include your email address, make the link as
follows
...filename.htm?email=mypid@vt.edu
where ...filename.htm is the page URL. and mypid@vt.edu is your
email address.
Note: If you link to the site without including your email address,
the pages that include these excercise mailers may not resize properly
on some older browsers. We are working on resolving this issue; thanks
for your patience.
You can combine the two (title and email) using the & character
as follows:
...filename.htm?title=Your%20Course%20Page%20Title&email=mypid@vt.edu
Contributing to the Site
Web sites, by their very nature, are always "works in progress,"
and we are very interested in feedback from those of you who use these
modules in their courses:
- Please sent comments and suggestions directly to the site
adminstrator, Dr. Jim Dubinsky.
- We are particularly interested in expanding the range of sample
documents on the site (both good and bad examples). If you have
material you'd like to contribute, please forward it (along with permission
from the author) to your teacher.
- All audio lectures on the site were created using PowerPoint
and RealPresenter. If you would like to create your own lectures to
supplement the material here, either for your own site or to add to
ours, contact Jim.
Feel free to review the Information for Students
for tips on using various features of the site. We look forward to working
with you and hearing your feedback on our material. Thank you.
