Technical Writing
Modules:

Information for Students

As a student using these modules to improve your workplace communication skills, you can take advantage of several important features to help you learn the material:

  • Most obviously, the text in each module is the primary "lecture."

  • Each module also contains a brief audio PowerPoint lecture that highlights key points and helps direct your reading. These lectures range from 4-8 minutes long; download time is relatively fast, even over a modem. You'll need Real One Player to watch the slide show and hear the lecture; you can download the free version if you don't want the full player.

  • Most modules include self-assessments - brief on-line quizzes like the one below. Answer the questions, then click the Check Answers button to see how well you understand the concepts being discussed.

Technical Writing is a required course in my major because:

  1. The curriculum had a few extra hours to fill up.
  2. The government mandated it.
  3. Communicating clearly is important to my success on the job.

  • The modules also include exercises that you can complete and submit to your instructor using a form like the one below. Be sure to fill in your e-email address; depending on how your instructor has set up the site, you may also need to fill in the instructor's email address. (Note: if the field for "Instructor's email" appears, the page may not resize correctly on some older browsers; we are working to correct that issue.)

  • Many modules also include sample documents and links to additional information; be sure to review the samples, follow the links, and ask your instructor any time you have questions.

  • The document-specific modules include editing checklists to help you review your work and make sure you've included all the necessary information. These checklists are available in RTF format, so you can open them in Microsoft Word.

If you have any questions about the material as you work, contact your instructor. If you encounter any problems with the site itself (e.g. outdated links), contact the site adminstrator, Dr. Jim Dubinsky.
