Memos are usually in-house correspondence to someone you've already established contact with .

The use of memos has expanded to cover the same sorts of purposes as letters. Currently memos sometimes used for:

  1. requests
  2. claims
  3. adjustments
  4. orders
  5. sales
  6. credit
  7. goodwill
  8. announcements
  9. records of agreement
  10. informal follow-ups to telephone conversations
  11. report transmittals and
  12. proposals.

While formal letter writing has decreased in the age of electronic mail (Email), memos will probaly survive because of their concise visibility.

I would probably use a memo to send information to:

  1. A co-worker
  2. A supplier
  3. A customer
  4. A potential customer
