Before choosing letters as a means of communication within a work environment, specific types of letters are needed to secure employment. Most of your formal letter writing experience to this point has probably been focused around seeking information for or applying for employment or internships. Cover letters are an important part of the job search process. Often, the first impression that a prospective employer gets of you is made by the design, and content of your cover letter. This check list will help you evaluate your cover letter's design and content.

The Virginia Tech Careers Planning and Placement Office web site has an excellent selection of sample cover letters.

You use a cover letter to

  1. Apply for a job
  2. Highlight key facts about yourself
  3. Relate your skills to the job you're applying for
  4. Demonstrate your knowledge of the company
