Heuristic

The following heuristic, developed by Walter Beale in Real Writing, is a useful beginning as an initial step to examining a prospective question.
  1. Define the Problem

    A. Demonstrate the need for change
    B. The burden of proof rests with the individual advocating change

  2. Explain the Cause(s) of the Problem

    A. Look for a way to eliminate the cause of the problem
    B. Find a way to alleviate the effects of the problem
    C. Dump the old system; develop a whole new way of business

  3. Examine the Workability and Feasibility of the Solution

    A. Make sure the solution will actually perform as promised
    B. Determine whether you can actually achieve what you promise

  4. Acceptability of Solution

    A. Show how the proposed solution will conform to institutional standards and policies
    B. Explain what values of the institution will be served by this solution
    C. Show what values of the client or customer will be served by the solution

  5. Available Alternatives

    A. Explain the criteria for judging among alternatives
    B. Explain how criteria will be measured
