I just happened to see a preview of this today and my initial reaction was similar. However, it is a prequel to Carpenter's 1982 film, going into detail about what happened at the Norwegian base during the three days before the Carpenter story, so maybe it isn't a total waste. See Wikipedia article "The Thing (2011 film)" if you're interested.
On the other hand, the biggest previous Hollywood work I can find for the lead actress is Final Destination 3. :(
