Robert Charles Wilson just put his thoughts about this sort of thing on Facebook:
--J.J.P.
<<Last month I read Neal Stephenson's enormous, oddly-titled bestseller REAMDE. Yesterday I started reading Haruki Murakami's enormous, oddly-titled bestseller 1Q84. Next month I'll be reading Stephen King's enormous, oddly-titled bestseller 11/22/63. It's like Pilates for the wrist muscles. (So far, at least, the Murakami is very good.)>>

JJP?
I actually teach a course called ?The Long Novel,? and I find the form much more satisfying than short stories, novellas, or even ?average? length novels. With my SF class right now, we?re doing McDonald?s River of Gods, not a monster but certainly longish. So much more of an opportunity for immersive world building, which is essential to sf.
BTW, I think that in Japan 1Q84 was initially published as three volumes (which is how Stephenson envisioned the Baroque cycle?as nine rather than three novels).
