I actually teach a course called "The Long Novel," and I find the form much more satisfying than short stories, novellas, or even "average" length novels. With my SF class right now, we're doing McDonald's River of Gods, not a monster but certainly longish. So much more of an opportunity for immersive world building, which is essential to sf.

BTW, I think that in Japan 1Q84 was initially published as three volumes (which is how Stephenson envisioned the Baroque cycle-as nine rather than three novels).
