I was lucky enough to attend an MFA program where we were put through the  
prosody wringer. But I know a lot of MFA students who were not. For the 
complete  novice, I still recommend Paul Fussell's POETIC METER AND POETIC FORM. 
I haven't  read it in years and would probably disagree with most of what 
he says now, but  I don't think I ever wrote a paper in grad school (except 
for one on Marx)  without having it close by.
