So, Robin, what living poet of all those eligible for the post would you 
deem towering?  Any?  I don't like the adjective for poets, myself.  I'm 
not sure I can think of any American poet I'd call towering.  My 
favorites weren't/aren't towering.  In England maybe Marlowe, 
Shakespeare, Milton, Wordsworth and Yeats?  None of them seem to me to 
tower like Beethoven or Wagner.  Nor any painters.  Except maybe 
Michelangelo.
