"There's such a blast of mediocre poetry these days," I've told grad
students, "you have to pay someone to read the stuff. That's why they
invented the M.F.A."

I don't believe it, of course. I think this is a remarkable time in terms of
highly intelligent and artistic writing. Great time to be alive. A new world
to open with every good, new writer.

(Of course, a lot of people learning means a great variety in terms of
quality.)
