Understanding the South, Understanding America: The American South in
Regional, National, and Global Perspectives

American Studies at the University of Manchester is pleased to announce
the launch of an AHRC-funded International Research Network devoted to
the interdisciplinary study of the US South from the colonial era to the
contemporary period. Directed by Brian Ward in cooperation with
colleagues at the Universities of Cambridge (Tony Badger), Copenhagen
(Martyn Bone) and Florida (Bill Link), this international Network seeks
to encourage methodological innovation in Southern Studies across
disciplines, promote a more sophisticated understanding of key aspects
of southern history, and foster greater appreciation of the
relationships between the South and other national and international
sites.

Following a successful preliminary conference in Manchester in May 2008,
further meetings are planned in 2009-10 for Florida, Cambridge,
Copenhagen and Manchester again.

For more information on the Network visit the Understanding the South
