I can't say I've researched it, but I do notice that it is incredibly 
rare that a major prize does not go to a Big Name--probably for both 
reasons.  When it doesn't, it's almost always clearly motivated by some 
form of political correctness.  Or, in the case of prizes like the Yale, 
it goes to a protege of a Big Name.
