*Call For Papers: Engaging the NEW American Studies*
*The University of Birmingham: 22 **–** 23 of May 2009*
The fourth in a series of annual international seminars, this is designed to
bring together leading scholars and top postgraduates from around the world
to discuss "America" in its historical and contemporary contexts.

The recent events in America; including the election of President-Elect
Barack Hussein Obama and the start of the global economic crisis, have led
international commentators to ask whether the notion of "America" has been
fundamentally changed. Can recent events be situated in the context of a
union that periodically undergoes seismic shifts, or are we witnessing a
more radical departure from long-held American values and perceptions.
Within America and world wide, definitions of America are being re-examined,
and reactions to America re-considered.

This two-day international conference calls together scholars and post
graduates to discuss visions of a changing America old and new, and examine
the positive and negative perceptions of America. Please do come along to
this event and – if you wish – deliver a paper.

Plenary speakers will include:
*Paul Giles*, Rothermere American Institute*,* University of Oxford
*Donald M Pease*, Dartmouth College
*Conference Fee: £19*
Includes registration, coffee, tea, light refreshments, and a buffet lunch
If you wish to deliver a paper please submit a title for your paper and an
abstract (200 - 300 words) to* **Claire Kilbey* at Claire_kilbey at hotmail.com
.
This CFP lasts until Friday 1st of May 2009.
