"Making the book was not so much liberating as terrifying," she says. "You know, I'm a performer by nature. That's my bread and butter, and that's my job. So when I write, I always intend to bring the work on to stage. I'm sort of making fuel for my performances. To put these songs that live in the air onto a page was weird. I was sort of afraid that everyone would look at them and go, 'Wow, this sucks.'"
