I like the story, James. A query: in US English do you use 'auctioned 
off' in that way? The sentence, to my mind, is screaming out for a 
missing 'were' before 'auctioned' or 'was' before 'sold' as the grammar 
of the sentence demands such but maybe that's just to British ears.
