Don't be taken in: there is no one way to write a poem, no recipe or instruction manual, no winning formula where competitions are concerned. It's something you can only learn by doing, and even then it remains a slippery and mysterious process.

As the Irish poet Michael Longley said, "If I knew where poems came from, I'd go there." But since I once had the privilege of acting as a judge of the Arvon International Poetry Competition, I do have a few thoughts that might be useful if you are thinking of trying your hand.
