Some poets, like Levis, especially in The Widening Spell of  Leaves, use 
punctuation as a way to direct us through the poem, to  slow  readers down or 
speed then up there. By the same token, the use of  the ampersand to substitute 
for the word "and" seems to me to be a means of  speeding things along. By and 
large I think standard punctuation should be used  in poetry unless there is a 
really good reason for not doing  so.
