"The noise of debate makes music," Gloucester poet John Ronan once wrote in a tribute to his flinty hometown. But the noise of late has hardly been music to his ears.


Ronan's recent appointment as Gloucester's second poet laureate, following the death last December of laureate-for-life Vincent Ferrini, has triggered a loud debate over the value of the arts in this blue-collar port city.
