I also grew up o the west coast, California, Oregon, and Alaska (I
currently live in Fairbanks). We tend to compress our words, cutting
out extra vowels and compressing two short syllables into a single
long syllable. Most of us also pronounce our T's as D's when it is at
the middle or end of a word. Of course, that brings up the question,
do you base your syllables on how you read it, or how you think your
readers will read it.
