I think that at least it's a sign of a certain health in the US poetry
scene that Bill Knott's rant gets discussed: an equivalent complaint in
the UK would simply be ignored. Not that I'm coming down on any sides in
the particulars of Knott's ire - I simply don't know much about the
poets concerned. 'lighght' has a kind of effect, it doesn't do to look
too hard at it though, I'm not too sure about making a system out of it
though.
Perhaps if the argument gets too vexed the combatants ought after all to
be told to 'hushsh' and be 'choirt'. Hey, is that a poem I see:
After the Concert
choirt
(it has certain ambiguous suggestions of 'hurt' and 'dirt' as well you know)
(wink)
