  "Writing poems is my way of confronting life," he says.

  In "Genkyo," his sixth book of poetry published last autumn, he raises issues ranging from the predicament of atomic bomb survivors living in South Korea to the suffering of Iraqi children afflicted by fallout from depleted uranium bullets. In his view, the Hiroshima tragedy is not over; new atomic victims are joining those of his own generation.
