Aaaah!! Do you really mean this? I don't find either
easy to like at all, and not because they're
"hackneyed" or "mainstream". I just think most of what
they did is ugly and boring. Really, truly, and in
complete good faith. Especially Matisse. Ick. Couldn't
he have just stuck with textile design? 
Sorry once again. I'll check out those Jarrell essays
if I get the chance. But I remain skeptical.
