James Fenton wins poetry prize
The Associated Press
LONDON -- English poet and journalist James Fenton has been awarded the 2007
Queen's Gold Medal for Poetry.
Fenton, 57, is a former professor of poetry at Oxford University whose
volumes include "The Memory of War," "Children in Exile," "Out of Danger" and the
anthology "Selected Poems."
One of Britain's best-known poets, Fenton covered the Vietnam War as a
foreign correspondent - a period that inspired much of his early verse - and has
also worked as a political journalist and theater critic.
He will receive his medal from Queen Elizabeth II this summer, Buckingham
Palace said Monday.
The monarch's gold medal was founded in 1933 by the queen's grandfather,
King George V. The prize, which does not carry a cash award, is given to a poet
from Britain or the Commonwealth of its former colonies. The winner - chosen
by a panel of "eminent men and women of letters" and approved by the monarch -
is traditionally announced April 23, which is believed to be the birthday of
William Shakespeare.
Previous winners include W.H. Auden, John Betjeman, Robert Graves, Stevie
Smith, Ted Hughes and Derek Walcott.
