Bob,
My tortuous explanation is probably to blame for why
his arguments seem "weird" -- I'd qualify them as
scary. Summing up 700pp of sociology's a bit of a
tough task for a listserv. What Bourdieu does is
essentially to take a *very* old idea -- the supposed
impossibility of "real" social climbing -- and applies
it to art. Think of the 17th-century bourgeois or
peasant trying to be a nobleman, and failing. But I
certainly wonder, with Jason, whether things haven't
changed a good deal over the last 20 years. Jason, Amy
and I were all born within a few years of each other
(and not in France, neither).
