Preview of General Psychology. Vol 11(3) Sep 2007, 502-612.

Abstract: This paper examines the literature on reading and mental
agility and relates it to the "reading cure" research that shows that
attentive reading improves mental abilities. There is an abundance of
evidence that obsessive readers have poorer health outcomes relative
to both other readers and to the population at large. Why doesn't the
reading cure help them? The arrival at an epiphany, an element often
missing in reading, may provide the answer. Other possible
explanations are that obsessive readers may be more depressed to begin
with and may be even worse off if they did not read. For both male and
female readers, they may be subject to stereotypic expectations of
instantly recognizable themes, which may put them at further risk.
Those seeking improvements in mental health through reading are
advised to adopt a what-me-worry style. Coughman, Click and Hack,
Boppa D.
