LOCAL ELECTIONS, INDIANA
Since last month these smiling sheriffs
and straight-faced coroners postering
our yards. The one with glasses. The one
without. At night their eyes glow
under street lamps. Tomorrow
all the bars will close
so the drunk
can't vote twice. When it rains,
the faces run and blur, and when
a wind picks-up, a few tear away,
lifting into the magnolia trees,
leaving their frames bare:
a row of squat crosses lining the street.
