I;m fond of Simic's poetry (& prose poety...that's
poetry too), but I do see a certain similarity
in the world-view of the post-WWII Eastern European
poets/writers. No matter what the topic, they
can't help themselves but to widen the aperture
of the piece to include some socio-political comment,
generally tilting toward the negative or world-weary.
Of course cultures that lived through two world
wars in less than a half-century, have certainly
been wounded psychically. Style can be kind
of scar.
