F.R. LEAVIS (1895-1978) might not have been the most influential literary
critic of the 20th century--that title would probably go to T.S. Eliot, whose
rather slight output of literary essays made a disproportionate impact on the
intellectual world--but within academia his effect was incalculable. Leavis's
career, which lasted from the 1930s to the '70s, coincided with the creation
of "English" as a subject in British universities and the
professionalization of literary studies.
