Lawrence Joseph, “The Poet and the Lawyer: The Example of Wallace Stevens”
Lawrence Joseph was born in Detroit in 1948. He attended the University of Michigan, where he received the Hopwood Award for poetry; Magdalene College, Cambridge University, where he read English; and the University of Michigan Law School. He is the author of five books of poems, including Into It (Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 2005) and Codes, Precepts, Biases, and Taboos: Poems 1973-1993 (FSG, 2005). He is also the author of Lawyerland (FSG, 1997), a book of prose, which is being developed into a film by John Malkovich. His poems, essays and critical writings have appeared widely in publications in the United States and internationally. He has received two NEA poetry fellowships, a Guggenheim fellowship, and is the third recipient of the New York County Lawyers Association's "Law and Literature Award." A distinguished scholar in labor and employment law, tort and compensation law, and legal theory, he is the Tinnelly Professor of Law at St. John's University School of Law. Married to the painter Nancy Van Goethem, he lives in downtown Manhattan.
