Linne's notes and tips on visiting Yorkshire
First of all, for those coming from the USA, I'd recommend you look
into rail passes which can only be purchased while you're still in the
USA. For a flat fee you can travel on trains in the UK, e.g. there's
one for travelling anywhere within the UK on four separate days within
a month. These may cost you less than British Rail tickets, especially
if you're walking into a station and buying to travel that day since
those are the most expensive of all.
Secondly, there are LOTS of things to do nearby: in York (walk the
medieval walls, visit medieval buildings within the city, the shambles
(best preserved medieval street in the country), the Jorvik Viking
Centre, the Fairfax House (Geogrian townhouse museum), the National
Railway Museum, the Castle Museum (wonderful museum of Victorian life
in Britain including a whole recreated street of shops indoors), and
lovely walks along the river, many parks, etc., besides the Minster,
largest gothic cathedral north of the Alps. A bit further afield but
all accessible by public transport are the great medieval abbeys of
Yorkshire: Fountains Abbey, Bylands Abbey, Riveaux Abbey, Jervaulx
Abbey, and Whitby Abbey on the coast north of Scarborough. For
walkers, the Yorkshire Dales are only half an hour north of here, the
North Yorkshire Moors even closer. So think about extending your
holiday to enjoy the area; these websites will tell you more about it:
