GUIDELINES

Current Notes (updated February, 2002):

Note--please use only the email addresses below for submissions. Any submissions received at other addresses will be deleted. In particular, do not send submissions to editor@thebluemoon.com--you wouldn't believe the amount of junk mail this address receives. Submissions are now open for fiction, hypermedia and poetry. See below.

The not-too-fine print: Please note that if your work is accepted, publication may take place up to six months later, though we like to move quicker when possible. Publication in BMR entails the use of First North American Serial Rights, a one time, non-exclusive use of Electronic Rights, and we also request the (non-exclusive) right to reprint the piece once in print, should we produce a print anthology in the future. All other rights revert to you, where they belong. If you reprint the piece elsewhere, we do ask that you cite BMR as the first place of publication--also, it's polite to wait at least 4 months before reprinting it. Unless noted, we're not currently interested in work that has been previously published. All published works are archived online unless otherwise requested in writing. No, we don't update these archives if you edit your piece after publication. We'd love to keep in touch with you after you publish with us--please subscribe to our BMR Writers-only mailing list. This list is how we will notify you if your piece is selected for an anthology.

Our current fiction guidelines: BMR considers submissions of literary and contemporary fiction of up to 3,000-4,000 words. Writers are asked to submit one story at a time--either in the body of an email or as an attachment in Microsoft Word or Wordperfect--to Theron Montgomery at fiction@thebluemoon.com. Include in the submission a brief bio about yourself, a short list of any recent publications and a current email address. We welcome original, dedicated work as well as new translations. Simultaneous submissions are unwelcomed. Reprints or previously published material will not be considered. Only electronic submissions are accepted.

Our current hypermedia guidelines: Web pieces will be selected on the basis of creative media use and overall quality. They may incorporate image, sound, and/or motion with text - however, we are looking for works that could only exist in electronic form. To submit electronically please send the relevant URL's and Titles in an e-mail to Hypermedia Editor, Marjorie C. Luesebrink, c/o hypermedia@thebluemoon.com. Include in your post a short bio and your current e-mail address. Please describe any technical requirements (plug-ins, etc.) with your submission. Your work should be viewable on widely-available browsers such as Netscape 4+ or Internet Explorer 4+ and with a range of bandwidths. Editorial response can be expected within a month.

Our current poetry guidelines: Submit up to five poems - either in the body of an email or as an attachment in Microsoft Word - to Alan Michael Parker, Poetry Editor, c/o poetry@thebluemoon.com. Include with your poems a short bio and a current email address; multiple or simultaneous submissions are not welcome at this time. Generally, an editorial response to submissions can be expected within 1-2 months. We're open to diverse aesthetics, with a bias only toward charged language. We welcome original work as well as new translations; reprints or previously published material will not be considered. Only electronic submissions are accepted.
