HEL-L -- History of the English Language discussion list.

About HEL-L
English (USA)

HEL-L is a discussion forum dedicated to the topic of the History of the English Language. HEL-L serves as a forum for the exchange of knowledge and the encouragement of scholarship in the field of the History of the English Language. This list germinated at a 1993 SEMA (Southeastern Medieval Association) session on "Approaches to Teaching the History of the English Language," organized by Steve Guthrie (Agnes Scott College). In the discussion segment, it was suggested that an e-mail list would be of great benefit to the community of HEL teachers.

At its inception, HEL-L's original intention was to disseminate information, approaches, and methods pertinent to teaching the History of the English Language. Over time, this list developed into a discussion group which included not only the teaching of the subject but also scholarship in the subject as well. Consequently, in 2003 a new list, "Teaching the History of the English Language List" (THEL-L), was formed to concentrate on teaching the History of the English Language. At the same time, HEL-L was reconstituted to deal with the more general topic of the History of the English Language, its study and scholarship.

Although there are other lists whose members frequently raise the kinds of questions most appropriate to HEL-L, it is always clear that such discussions are viewed as tangents to those lists' primary concerns. By providing a clearly defined focus, HEL-L will relieve unnecessary and unwanted pressures on those lists. At the same time, HEL-L will continue to provide a lively forum for the advancement and exchange of knowledge and learning in this field.
