While still known as the Center for Textual & Editorial Studies (CTES), CATH members submitted a proposal to the Incentive Awards Program to host a conference on "The History, Function, and Study of Watermarks." The proposal was funded and the Conference was held at the Hotel Roanoke October 10-13, 1996. Participants came from the U.S., Canada, Venezuela, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, and Australia, representing areas as diverse as English, Music, Library Science, Book and Art Conservation, Spanish, the Du Pont Corporation, and Fotoscientifica.

The proceedings volume--Puzzles in Paper: Concepts in Historical Watermarks (Oak Knoll Press and the British Library, 2000)--is available from Oak Knoll Press.

September 28-October 1 2000, CATH provided technical support and participated in sessions at Learning 2000: Reassessing the Virtual University (at the Hotel Roanoke & Conference Center).
